Here’s some of my new work painted outdoors. It’s always a challenge, but so satisfying to combine my love of putting paint to a canvas while in the beauty of nature. Time passes quickly as I immerse myself in the sounds of rushing water and birdsong as the light changes while the sun passes overhead.

Hi again. I am so enjoying journeying with the diminished threat of Covid, aren't you? Family from Texas visited here in Arkansas with me returning the visit at their homes in Houston where we gardened together. I explored a few hikes in Arkansas and shot plenty of reference photos for painting. I especially enjoyed two recent trips – one in February to Heber Springs to view the trumpeter swans before they migrated from their winter home.  And I just returned from a kayaking trip to Tupelo, Arkansas where friends and I kayaked the Bayou De View Water Trail.

In the studio, I’ve painted some larger paintings. I concentrate on letting values do most of the work to create believable landscapes. I’ve been spending more time on underpaintings using a Zorn (red, black, & yellow) or black and white palette, sometimes in acrylic, and then overpainting in oils. I continue to explore the use of harmonious color using a limited color palette. I strive to reduce detail and avoid painting photographic representation, to allow viewers to imagine for themselves their own interpretation of the scene I’ve suggested.

If you’re in Mountain Home, stop by the First Street Framing and Art Gallery to view a variety of my paintings in person. Or contact me at kathealtazan@gmail.com for an appointment to visit my studio.

…and more about the journey
The second half of 2021 I traveled to Florida, Texas, and Illinois after covid travel restrictions were lessened. I explored Arkansas and Missouri while hiking and kayaking, snapping reference photos for painting and sketching in the studio and in plein air.
Though I'm not showing as many finished paintings as this time last year, I continued with a “daily painter” mindset. I spent hours with new teachers, online and in person experimenting with new media and techniques. I decided what I liked and painted over what I didn’t - and focused on achieving:
  • Use of colors and values to create distance in the landscape
  • Layering with underpainting, glazing, and collage
  • Treetops 16x12" Oil on Panel
Art expressing energy and emotion to the viewer
In October, I opened my studio to visitors for three days during The Art Odyssey (TAO), along with 20 other local and regional artists who did the same. Thanks to everyone who visited during TAO. Learning from viewers’ reactions to my work will help so much with the journey onward.

I hope you enjoy these new paintings.
