Painting Waterfalls Plein Air

August found me painting plein air during a workshop led by Kathleen B. Hudson at Cumberland Falls, KY and lodging at the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park's Dupont Lodge. During the 3-day workshop  Kathleen demonstrated her en plein air oil painting techniques atop the fall's viewing platforms and  then gave feedback as the 14 member class painted on their own.

Many of us also gathered at the falls at night for the Moonbow viewing - the only location in the Western hemisphere where this phenomenon occurs. Kathleen even set up her easel and painted it! Students who attended also  received Kathleen's "Painting Water in Oil" 44-page workshop handbook detailing her drawing, value studies, color mixing, block-in, brushwork, and edgework. She emphasizes that observing the landscape and doing small studies en plein air are essential for accurate value ranges, color shifts (especially in shadows), and distant atmospheric effects.

My event paintings included some small thumbnails, an 8x10 and a 9x12.
Also, I didn't photograph the Moonbow but another student shared a photo.
